Knoydart holiday business expands
01 September 2004

Two Lochaber brothers are expanding their tourism business to offer adventurous visitors the chance to spend a night in style in one of the most remote parts of Scotland.

Robert and John Gordon own and manage Barisdale Estate on the rugged and isolated Knoydart Peninsula, offering stalking and self-catering holidays.

The scenic area, north of Mallaig, is a hotspot for hikers and nature lovers, and those who just want to get away from it all.

The land has been in the family since the 1950s - when Robert and John's father bought it - and the brothers have run it since 1990.

Despite only being accessible by boat, between 5,000 and 7,000 determined tourists make the trip to the estate every year.  That meant that it was time for the brothers to expand on their accommodation options.

Robert explained: "The business is split between stalking and the tourism generated by walkers and climbers.

"We have been driven by demand from people who come to stay with us.

"We've converted the old byre into a self-catering apartment, with one bedroom and a bathroom."

The brothers have another reason for expansion - like many of those whose business lies in their land, they often struggle to break even.

Robert added: "Hopefully, the new place will generate more income, as it's in response to lots of people asking.

"What we have really tried to do is manage the tourism side of the business. We're very attached to the estate - we just want this to succeed."

Converting a barn formerly used as storage space is no small task - and it is costing the brothers over £20,000.

That was when Lochaber Enterprise stepped in to help - the brothers received a building grant of £3,600 and a £2,400 Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) quality building grant.

Jacqueline McDonell, head of business and community development with Lochaber Enterprise said: "Estates such as Barisdale can benefit greatly from environmental and wildlife tourism.  The increasing popularity of these niche markets has provided a good development opportunity in this remote area, which we are pleased to support."

The additional accommodation, which is under construction at the moment, is expected to provide 280 extra bed nights in the first year and a £6,000 increase in sales by year three.

Robert said: "The local enterprise company's investment helps significantly - it's a helping hand to get us started."
