Highland first as rock wall takes to the road
30 August 2004

Thrill seekers keen to sample the highs of rock climbing no longer need to head for the hills.

Instead they can take delivery of a towering six metre pinnacle, complete with instructors to show them the ropes.

Aviemore-based outdoor activity company G2 has taken to the road with the Highlands' first transportable climbing wall, offering it as an exciting attraction for a wide range of events.

The brightly coloured moveable pinnacle is one of only three of its kind available in Scotland.

Outdoor activity experts Nick Etheridge and Mike Gale, who set up G2, bought the £30,000 climbing wall with £6,000 assistance from local enterprise company Moray Badenoch and Strathspey Enterprise (MBSE).

Nick said: "Rock climbing is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK at the moment, enjoyed by children and adults alike.

"We know travel issues, costs, or a lack of climbing in the immediate area, can make it difficult for many people to try the sport. That's why we decided to bring climbing to people who want it.

"The wall has already proved a great crowd-puller wherever we've taken it and we are very grateful to MBSE for their help in getting it on the road."

Nick and Mike, who run summer and winter outdoor activity courses, say the climbing wall can provide an eye-catching centre-piece to a range of occasions such as product launches, corporate events, team bonding and staff motivation sessions.

Suitable for children as young as five, they also see the wall becoming a big hit at   birthday parties, fetes and fundraisers.

Nick added: "The wall can also be used as part of a community education programme. We appreciate the importance of promoting health and fitness in the community."

The transportable climbing wall, which comes fully staffed, equipped and insured, requires a space of  8m x 8m on a firm surface, such as a car park or well-bedded playing field.

Douglas Yule, chief executive of MBSE said the local enterprise company were happy to assist an innovative and imaginative business development.

He added: "It's great to see a company identifying new ways of offering its expertise and services to as many people as possible.

"I wish Nick and Mike all the best with this new venture and look forward to seeing the climbing wall all over the place.
