Gateway to Glen Shiel gets a facelift
27 April 2004

Situated at the foot of the spectacular mountains, the Five Sisters of Kintail, Shiel Bridge café, shop and campsite, is often people's first stop in Lochalsh.  The location is now to undergo an upgrade to enhance the quality of the services on offer.

Owners John and Lynne Metcalfe bought the property last year after leasing it for the previous five years.

The development includes upgrading the campsite with landscaping, electric caravan hook-ups and a new toilet and shower block.  The shop upgrade will include new lighting, hygienic non-slip flooring and improved heating.  The external toilets will also be restructured and upgraded to allow access through the shop.

It is hoped the upgrade to the campsite will attract higher occupancy rates and the overall development will attract more passers by from the main A87, which passes the site.

Local enterprise company Skye and Lochalsh Enterprise (SALE) is providing building and development grants totalling £30,000 to assist with the upgrade.

Calum Macpherson, head of development with SALE, said: "John and Lynne have now operated the business for six years and have worked hard to make it a success.  Now that they own the site, they can start the improvements they have wanted to make for many years.

"The project is important because it will create and protect jobs in Shiel Bridge and will help secure the future of an important community shop.  I wish John and Lynne all the best for the coming season."

John and Lynne said: "The majority of motor home and touring caravan enthusiasts expect sites to be of a high standard, and by improving the site we hope to meet the expectations of these visitors.

"We are very grateful that SALE are assisting us with this exciting project which will provide much improved facilities for visitors and the local community."
