Busy start for Strath Print
13 April 2004

A new printing business that recently opened in Skye has had a busy start.  Strath Print Ltd, which is owned and managed by Peter Dunlop and Martin Benson, will fill the market gap created when the West Highland Publishing Company (WHPC) ceased printing.

Between them, Peter and Martin have 49 years experience of printing on the Isle of Skye so know the market very well.  Despite the rise of new media such as internet, mobile phones and satellite television, printed paper is still a very important means of communication.  It is especially important to attract and convey information to visitors to Skye and Lochalsh.

Skye and Lochalsh Enterprise (SALE) assisted the Strath Print's purchase of the up to date printing equipment with a development grant of £50,000.  They have also provided HIE-Starts allowances for Peter and Martin to help them establish their new business.  HIE-Starts is a European-funded initiative designed to help new businesses in their first year with valuable advice, assistance and financial support.

David Pringle, a development manager for SALE, said: "The assistance provided will help create a dynamic new business with the ability to meet customer needs. The increased services and capacity Strath Print are offering will give local businesses and organisations a modern, quality service in line with services on offer in other parts of the UK.

"The new business has provided employment for two more people, as well as Peter and Martin, keeping important printing sector jobs in the area."

Directors of Strath Print, Martin and Peter, said: "We are really pleased that we have been able to set up this business and are keen to establish a strong customer base in Skye and Lochalsh.

"We feel it is very important to have a modern printing facility in the area and hope to be able to provide further employment and training opportunities in the future."
