Gillies Fine Foods opening
10 March 2004

Renowned Scottish food writer Sue Lawrence will officially open the new premises of Gillies Fine Foods Limited tomorrow (March 11th).

Gillies Fine Foods, who are well known for their quality Scottish produce, recently moved into their new purpose-built premises on the Dingwall Business Park.

Su Gillies (correct) started Gillies Fine Foods in her kitchen at home in Conon Bridge five years ago and later moved to premises in Strathpeffer. At the beginning of 2003 her husband, Ruari Gillies, retired from the motor trade after 35 years and joined Su in the food business.

Their previous accommodation was a bit cramped and for production to grow they had to find a new location. When they found no suitable property was available they decided to build their own premises to suit their purpose.

The building project was supported by Ross and Cromarty Enterprise (RACE) and by the Scottish Executive Environment and Rural Affairs Department (SEERAD).

Su said: "Our new premises are ideal and we're very grateful to RACE and SEERAD for their support. This is actually our third move trying to find the right location but this time will be the last!"

All of the soft fruit used in the production of Gillies Fine Foods conserves, fruit drinks, herb and fruit vinegars and dressings, is grown locally as are many of the vegetables. One of their main aims is to promote the excellent quality of Highland food.

Talking about their produce Su said: "We like to support other local companies and always encourage small growers to supply us, there are quite a few people into growing fruit and vegetables in the area now.'

Gordon Cox, RACE chief executive, said: "Staffing levels have risen in the new building and production has already increased and the customer database has grown with it. We are really pleased the move has already been so positive for this local company with a UK wide reputation for quality and excellence."

In addition to a larger manufacturing capacity, they also have a retail facility for their produce. Su and Ruari are offering the public a chance to try some of their produce when they hold two 'tasting' days on Friday 19th and Saturday 20th March from10am-4.30pm.
