Who’s the daddy?

Who’s the daddy?

It may sound like heresy but Google looks set to be up ended from its patriarchal role in the search engine world.

Yahoo! and MSN have both launched full scale offensives to topple Google’s dominance. Yahoo!, which formerly based its results on data from Google, has rolled out a new in-house search engine founded on an algorithm created by Yahoo! engineers. And MSN have rolled out a new search service that is touted as producing faster, tidier results.

But in a move akin to a search engine arms race, Google recently escalated the number of pages it has indexed to a brain numbing 4.2 billion pages. What pages these are, and their relevance, has not yet fully emerged. Likewise the question whether this quantity can be matched by the quality of results.

As Google limbers up for its much vaunted stock flotation, the search engine landscape is suddenly changing. There are interesting times ahead for web searchers and the suits at the Google HQ.

The upshot for web site owners is: get your search engine submissions in now.
