Five star upgrade for Lerwick's only campsite
12 November 2003

Lerwick's only campsite is to undergo an upgrade aimed at attaining a five-star rating from VisitScotland.

At present the four-star rated Clickimin Caravan and Camping Park can cater for up to 40 tents and 10 caravans, eight of which have access to electrical hook ups.

The campsite, open from May to September each year, plays host to visitors from many different countries, with the majority travelling to Shetland from Scandinavia and the UK. During the season caravans have often to be turned away from the site due to lack of space.

The upgrade will see the number of sites available for caravans increased to 20 to reflect demand. They will all be hard standing with the necessary space for vehicle parking and an area for awnings to be erected. All sites will have an electricity and water supply.

Local enterprise company Shetland Enterprise is providing funding of £32,531 with a grant of £21,688 coming from EU HIE Standards towards the total project cost of £120,487.  The remainder will be met by Shetland Recreational Trust (SRT), the registered charity which runs the site.

Shetland Enterprise development manager David Watson said: "The Clickimin Caravan and Camping Park is at present a four-star facility, but these improvements will enable the campsite to provide a facility that meets the five star standard of the VisitScotland park grading system."

He added: "The majority of touring caravan and mobile home enthusiasts expect sites to be of a high standard, and by improving the site SE and the SRT hope to meet the expectations of these visitors."

James Johnston, general manager at SRT said:  "I am very pleased that Shetland Enterprise are working with us on this very exciting project which will provide much improved facilities for visitors as well as benefiting the local community by increasing its capacity for involvement in the tourism industry."
