Local economic forum launches development strategy
11 November 2003

A new strategy document pointing the way ahead for the public and private sectors to successfully promote and support economic development in Inverness and Nairn has been launched.

Among the issues highlighted in the recently published local economic development strategy formulated by Inverness and Nairn Local Economic Forum (INLEF) are:

* Problems with the trunk road network in the area and in particular the serious investment needed to improve the A96 and A9.

* The need to address the shortage of affordable housing in the area.

* The potential threat to growth posed by labour and skills shortages.

The publication of the document marks the completion of the second year of operation of INLEF, a partnership including Inverness and Nairn Enterprise, The Highland Council, Inverness College, Highlands of Scotland Tourist Board, Nairn Business Association, Inverness and District Chamber of Commerce, Jobcentre Plus, The Scottish Council Development and Industry and the University of the Highlands Millennium Institute.

INLEF chairman Councillor Bob Wynd said the new strategy document provided a valuable focus on the priorities facing the public and private sectors in the Inverness and Nairn area.

Mr Wynd said: "Now that we have produced our strategy we look forward to working in partnership with other bodies to address the priority issues we have highlighted.

"With regard to the problem of the A96, in particular, an upgrading to dual carriageway would have the highest possible impact in economic, environmental and safety terms which would help ensure the continuing prosperity of our area."
