| New fish processing units promise jobs boost for Scalloway | |
| 21 October 2003 Two new fish processing units in the Shetland fishing port of Scalloway are set to provide a jobs boost for the community. Negotiations are currently underway with two prospective tenants for the modern units at Blackness Pier. Both companies are Shetland-based, with one seeking to re-locate because its existing base requires substantial modernisation, and the other aiming to diversify its business. Local enterprise company Shetland Enterprise (SE), part of the Highlands and Islands Enterprise network, identified the need for new processing facilities and purchased land at the pier. After SE prepared a 'design and build' brief, local building firm Irvine Contractors submitted the successful tender. With a £330,000 funding package from SE, two 1,500 sq.ft. semi-detached buildings were built and advertised for lease. Shetland Enterprise spokesman, Rae Tulloch said: "It has been a protracted process, but we now have these units completed and available for occupation. They are under offer to two local firms which should mean that important fishing jobs are not only being created but retained in Shetland. "Scalloway was once one of the busiest ports in Scotland and is still a thriving fishing community. These fish processing units are a welcome addition, enabling fish landed in Scalloway to be processed locally." | |
