New chief executive for Shetland Enterprise
01 August 2003

Dr Ann Black from Sumburgh has been appointed as the new chief executive of Shetland Enterprise.

Dr Black (35), who has a Ph.D in Economics and Social History and an MA (Hons) in Economic History and Sociology from Glasgow University, will take over the helm from the current chief executive, David Finch, when he steps down at the end of this month.

A native Shetlander and former pupil of Anderson High School, Dr Black joined Shetland Enterprise as deputy chief executive in 2000.  She began her working career with Highlands and Islands Airports Ltd at Sumburgh, becoming assistant airport manager in 1998.

Her experience within the Highlands and Islands Enterprise network is complemented by an extensive knowledge of local issues.  She is an active member of the community and was a key figure in establishing a network of local community learning centres, the Connect women's networking group and the Shetland Renewable Energy Forum among others.

Commenting on her appointment, Dr Black said:  "I would like to pay tribute to David's work and look forward to building on the momentum he created.  This is a big challenge but is one that I am looking forward to.  It is my intention that we continue to focus on diversifying Shetland's economic base and actively encourage the tremendous level of entrepreneurship in Shetland by supporting even more new business start-ups.  Sustaining our remote and fragile areas is also a key priority."

Chairman of Shetland Enterprise, Brian Isbister welcomed Ann's appointment saying: "I am delighted with Ann's appointment as she will make an excellent chief executive.  She brings a lot of experience and enthusiasm to the post, and her knowledge of Shetland will stand her in good stead to build upon David Finch's successful eight-year reign."

Sandy Cumming, chief executive at HIE said: "As deputy chief executive, Ann made a highly positive contribution to the work of Shetland Enterprise during what has been a testing time for the islands.  She brings talent and a determination to ensure that Shetland Enterprise continues to serve the community, and I look forward to working with her."
