| WIE commissions study into impact of fixed links | |
| 08 July 2003 A major study, assessing the economic and social impacts that the Scalpay Bridge and the Berneray causeway have had on the islands, is getting underway. Western Isles Enterprise (WIE) is funding the £25,000 survey - to be carried out by economic consultants, SQW Limited - with the full support of Highlands and Islands Enterprise and Comhairle nan Eilean Siar. The study will focus on the impacts generated by the investment in the bridge and the causeway since they were completed in 1997 and 1998 respectively, looking at tourism, business development and the impact on employment. Social aspects such as population levels and structure; changes in service provision and access to services will also be considered. In addition, the survey will help determine emerging development opportunities for Berneray and Scalpay and whether there are lessons regarding the possible introduction of fixed links elsewhere in the Highlands and Islands. It will also explore whether there have been any negative effects from having fixed links to these two fragile islands. The research process involves SQW Ltd carrying out random, short telephone interviews with residents on Berneray and Scalpay to gain their perspective on the fixed links. Local businesses, as well as those on North Uist and Harris will also be asked for their input as will a small number of public sector and related organisations. WIE chief executive Donnie Macaulay said: "Transport issues have a significant impact on all aspects of life in the Western Isles. The introduction of fixed links is seen as a critical component in the overall transport network of the area. "In the future there may be a range of opportunities to extend the fixed link network. Evaluating and understanding the full economic and social impact of previous investments will allow appropriate strategic decision making and the formulation of future plans. "We hope that the people of the islands will help us to achieve a good clear concept of how life has been affected by the fixed links which will be of great help in the future." | |
