Corporate activity centre has Jura-bility
15 July 2002

A Jura man is setting up a corporate activity centre on the island offering clients a range of team building activities and corporate entertainment.

William MacDonald is the man behind the Ballard Corporate Activity Centre, which he is operating along with several other partners. The centre will offer a range of activities including clay pigeon shooting, quad biking, paint balling, fishing and archery. These will be delivered in association with the partners who include Adrenalin Pursuits, the University of Glasgow, Ardfin Estates, Islay Distilleries and sporting estates on Islay and Jura.

Financial assistance from Argyll and the Islands Enterprise (AIE), has helped get the £20,400 project off the ground. A funding package worth £5,100 from AIE includes HIE Activity money - a European programme which supports tourism activities covering everything from mountaineering and fishing, to events and festivals.

William MacDonald is a native of Jura and works for Ardfin Estate. He also has his own shooting ground and self catering cottages, and for 20 years operated the Ballard Deer Farm which will now be the site for the new corporate activity centre.

Commenting on his latest project he said: "I have been interested in setting up a facility of this kind for some time as I feel Jura is an ideal location for activities of the type we will be offering.

"It is also important that any operation on Jura does not rely on passing trade as this is limited. Hence the majority of our business will be specifically targeting corporate entertainment and team building operations for which we have already had a very positive response with our first guests arriving next week."

Ken Abernethy, chief executive of AIE said: "Business tourism is a growing sector within the industry and one which we would like to see developed further. The Ballard Corporate Activity Centre is set to offer clients a high quality product in a stunning location and is an excellent example of a range of organisations working in partnership for the benefit of the local economy."
