25 June 2002

The Hebridean Celtic Festival which is sponsored by Western Isles Enterprise, has just launched its 2002 programme which is topped by the famous Irish band, Hothouse Flowers. A number of other artists will be performing, and there will be exciting pub sessions; children’s events; family sessions; adult workshops and Gaelic language tasters.

The festival runs from the 17th-20th July mainly in Stornoway in the Western Isles, with other events taking place in surrounding communities. Festival-goers will be able to enjoy the African drums and Gaelic song of Baka Beyond; the distinctive Scottish style of Shooglenifty; the Quebecois music of La Volée d’Castors and the virtuoso abilities of Ireland’s Mairead Nesbitt amongst others, from what is a quality international line-up.

Festival Director Caroline MacLennan said: "Last year people from 26 different countries visited and enjoyed our festival. This year we hope to entertain even more people from around the world and are delighted to offer four days of high quality music, fun and education."

A spokesman for the Hothouse Flowers explained how the band were looking forward to playing this year: "We can't wait to bring our music to a beautiful place we've never been visited before and get together with our Hebridean cousins for a great festival!"

The festival has grown more successful each year since its inception in 1995 and attracts thousands of people. Its sponsors also include Comhairle nan Eilean Siar; Scottish Arts Council; Tennents; Comunn na Gaidhlig; Stolt Sea Farm Ltd; Caledonian MacBrayne and Scottish Water.
