| 11 June 2002 The latest in a series of workshops is offering community groups across the Skye and Lochalsh area the opportunity to learn the skill of resuscitation or how to put an accident victim in the recovery position. A four day first aid workshop will be held in Staffin on June 20/21 and June 27/28, and 12 places are currently available. The course is the result of a partnership project between Skye and Lochalsh Enterprise (SALE) and Skye and Lochalsh Council for Voluntary Organisations (SLCVO). Development manager for SALE, Jennifer Robertson said: "A series of workshops are on offer to over 250 community groups. We have delivered sessions on the Disability Discrimination Act, Child Protection, Data Protection and Health and Safety as well as the more recent training sessions on Charity Fundraising and First Aid. "We are currently planning to offer further community workshops on Drug and Alcohol awareness, Food Hygiene and Insurance later this year." SLCVO's Centre manager Michelle Seviour said: "The Community Awareness Workshops aim to respond directly to the real needs of community groups and by working together with SALE we have been able to achieve exactly that. The Charity Fundraising sessions for example gave groups the chance to consider their fundraising strategies and gave them the confidence and skills to make successful funding applications. They also looked at the best fundraising events for their needs and how to plan their fundraising successes. "The First Aid courses are 75% subsidised enabling community groups to afford First Aid training previously inaccessible because of high costs. They are also able to choose the option of training most suitable to their situation and to decide to have representatives who will be able to offer crucial basic First Aid skills (1 day course) and/or have a qualified First Aider (HSE Approved). Crucially for small community groups the First Aid courses offer group representatives the skills to handle emergency medical situations in a competent and confident manner." | |
