| 29 April 2002 A major new international sculpture exhibition - Land, Sea and Skye - has opened its doors in the An Tuireann Arts Centre, Portree featuring works inspired by Skye's breathtaking landscape. Artists from Scotland, France, Germany, Portugal, and the Czech Republic will display sculpture stimulated by their experience of Skye. The exhibition follows one week of residential field trips and a workshop held at Dun Flodigarry Hostel in Staffin in the north of the island. It is being organised by the Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop (ESW), a charity which provides studio and workshop facilties for artists and promotes education and access to the visual arts through sculpture activities. Development manager Angela Wrapson said: "ESW aims to build cultural links and exchanges with other national and international arts organisations as well as identifying and creating opportunities for artists to develop their skills and exhibit their work. "This is a not just a unique exhibition as it collates so many different artistic interpretations of Skye. It has been a great opportunity for the sculptors to experience and learn about another culture and exchange ideas about their work." Included in the exhibition is a piece of work by Scottish artist, Alice Betts. She has created a series of floating flags entitled 'Archipelago' which can be seen from the shore at Flodigarry in the north of Skye. Also exhibiting at Land Sea and Skye is Georges Boulard from France with his collection of moving aeroplanes which are on display on a hill beside Storr Lochs near Portree and Jobst Mahrenholz who's wall mounted comic style sculpture is designed to present the magic of Scotland. The exhibition was concieved in collaboration with An Tuireann gallery. The event is supported by a variety of local and international funders including the Scottish Arts Council, the Calouse Gulbenkian Foundation, the Hugh Fraser Foundation, the French Institute and Skye and Lochalsh Enterprise. | |
