Training courses prove popular with Lochaber manufacturers
24 April 2002

An innovative series of training courses for manufacturing businesses in Lochaber has proved so successful that a second run is being planned.

Organisers Lochaber Enterprise held the initial run of courses - in basic electrical skills and using computer controlled production systems - at Lochaber College in Fort William last month [March].

The courses were the first of their kind to be delivered locally and all the available places were quickly snapped up.  A wide range of local firms of all sizes took part, including BSW Timber, Corpach Boatbuilding, Newco, Industrial Electrical Services and Alcan.

Lochaber Enterprise contributed up to a maximum of half the cost of course fees for each participant.

Tina Davenport, training manager with the local enterprise company, said the feedback from those who had taken part was very positive.

"We provided these courses in response to local demand," Tina explained.  "This was very much an industry-led initiative

"Nothing like this was available in Lochaber before, so we knew we were filling a gap in provision.

"One of our key priorities as an enterprise agency is to ensure that local people have the opportunity to keep their skills up to date.  Training can play a vital part in helping both businesses and individual employees to remain competitive.

"We were delighted with the response to these courses and are looking forward to repeating the exercise in the near future."

Further courses are expected to be held in May or June.  Anyone interested in applying is welcome to contact Tina Davenport at Lochaber Enterprise, either by phoning 01397 704326, or emailing t.davenport@hient.co.uk.
