RECOGNITION FOR ORKNEY HOTEL
02 November 2000

An Orkney hotel which has undergone a substantial transformation in recent years has secured a top business award which recognises its commitment to staff development.

The Stromness Hotel is the 50th organisation in Orkney to become recognised as an Investor in People (IiP) and marks how far the 42 bedroom establishment has come in the past four years which included a major refurbishment and upgrading programme.

IiP is the national initiative which encourages companies and organisations to make the most of their key resource - their staff - by developing their skills in line with overall business objectives.

Manager at the Stromness Hotel Leona MacLeod said: "Achieving IiP is something the management of the hotel committed to early on, and the whole staff have been actively involved. It is one of the reasons for our recent success. Our motto is 'arrive as a guest, leave as a friend' which gives you some idea of our business philosophy. We pride ourselves on our friendliness and have received extremely positive feedback from our many visitors.

"The IiP process has helped improve our effectiveness in a shorter timescale and this has had a positive effect on both occupancy levels and the overall satisfaction of guests."

The hotel has had an excellent summer season and advance reservations are already being made for next year. In a new development, head chef Neil Taylor has recently launched his own website, to build upon one of the hotel's key attractions - the varied menus which use quality Orkney produce.

Leona MacLeod explained: "This idea was developed in order to give people a chance to meet Neil by email and find out more about the produce used and the dishes created. Offering this service means customers can ask questions, make suggestions and provide feedback at their leisure as well as get a personal response."

Orkney Enterprise co-ordinates IiP throughout Orkney by providing practical support and advice for local businesses and organisations working towards the standard which is independently assessed and awarded.

Head of IiP at Orkney Enterprise Chessa Llewellyn-White said: "This 50th IiP recognition is an important landmark as it demonstrates the willingness of local organisations to commit to continuous improvement. The Stromness Hotel has come a long way and will reap the rewards of IiP recognition now and in the future."
