NINETEEN LINE-UP FOR BUSINESS AWARD
25 April 2000

A dentists, a vet practice, a salmon farm and a garage are all breaking new ground in the Shetland Isles.

They are the first businesses in their respective professions from the area to secure the prestigious business development award Investors in People (IiP).

A total of 19 Shetland businesses and organisations received the award from Tavish Scott MSP at a ceremony held at the Clickimin Leisure Complex in Lerwick on Friday 21st April.

IiP is a national initiative which encourages companies and organisations to make the most of their key resource - their staff - by developing their skills in line with overall business objectives.

The initiative is co-ordinated in the north of Scotland by the Highlands and Islands Enterprise network. Shetland Enterprise are able to provide practical support and advice for local businesses and organisations working towards the IiP standard, which is independently assessed and awarded.

Tavish Scott said: "Due to its location, businesses in Shetland need to exploit anything that gives them more of a competitive edge. IiP recognition, not only helps improve how a business works, but it also says something positive to potential customers about the kind of business they are dealing with."

Glen Orchy House is the first guest house on Shetland to receive IIP recognition with the Sumburgh Hotel on the southern tip of the island being the first hotel to become recognised.

Mark Donaldson from the Sumburgh Hotel said: "IiP has provided us with a structure to ensure that our staff are properly trained and developed and that they all understand the direction the business is going in. This has resulted in a higher level of service and customer care which is vital for our future success in the tourist industry."

These 19 recognitions, brings the total number of organisations achieving the award in Shetland to 48 with a further 67 working towards the standard with the help of Shetland Enterprise.

Chief executive of Shetland Enterprise David Finch said: "These latest IiP recognitions are further evidence that organisations in Shetland see the significant improvements and efficiency savings that can be gained by following the IiP process.

"IiP encourages team working and staff involvement contributes to a more motivated and satisfied workforce which helps reduce staff turnover and increase productivity."
