| LIVESTOCK TRANSPORT DISINFECTANT FACILITIES FOR LOCHABER | |
| 09 April 2001 Disinfectant facilities for livestock transportation are now available in Lochaber at the new Torlundy auction mart. Following discussions with SERAD, facilities have been set up in response to the growing need for local farmers and crofters to bring overwintered animals back to Lochaber from other parts of Scotland. The disinfectant facilities are available by appointment and bookings should be made 24 hours in advance by contacting Isobel or Linda Campbell on 01397 705586. The facility opened last week and to date 12 operators have used the service with more bookings being taken every day. The service has been assisted with a funding package of £3,000 from Lochaber Enterprise (LE). Chief executive of LE, Jackie Wright said: "This is an essential service for local farmers who need to move their livestock back to the region. We are aware that local companies need both financial and practical advice at this time and we are currently running a series of business advice clinics which can be booked through Lochaber Enterprise. Details of the clinics will be advertised in the local press. "We will also be bringing forward specific initiatives to help tackle the problems created by the foot and mouth epidemic, including the provision of information to farmers and crofters and support for managed access to certain areas in the region." | |
